The Cost

The horrible devastation in Darfur is still going on, so obviously the toll on the region and the people is still ongoing. “During the last three decades, the Darfur region was exposed to waves of drought and desertification which has had a devastating impact on the local environment” (Salih) and the environment has become even worse since the beginning of the fighting in Darfur. The Arabs and the Africans were fighting to find water that is very scarce in the region “Now, experts fear the war and its refugee crisis are making the environment even worse, leaving the land increasingly uninhabitable and intensifying tensions with no end to the drought in sight” (USA Today). And the death toll is unbelievable. Much more than 400,000 have died and nearly just as many people are in refugee camps because they are not able to live in their homes anymore. And since the genocide is not over, the numbers will continue to grow.
